When the kids are sick, we often use the phrase “stomach bug.” It’s not too suprising Travis has taken that literally. Yesterday he told me, “Maybe I AM still sick. Yep, I think that bug is still in my stomach.”
“No, Travis,” I explained, laughing. “There’s not a real bug in your stomach. That’s just a figure of speech.”
“There IS a bug in my stomach,” he insisted. Then, with sly little smile, “I think it’s a grasshopper!”
Travis generally wakes up between 6:45 and 7. It’s still dark out, so he’ll come wandering down the hall (usually clutching four or five cars, or a banjo and his new clock, or his tractor-trailer and matching helicopter — we always hear him coming before he speaks) asking, “Is it morning?” It doesn’t matter how we answer. He always decides “It IS morning,” and comes to get us out of bed.
The day after his hospital adventure he slept past eight and was surprised to find it light outside. “Is it morning?” he asked as he came out of his room. “Yes, Travis, it’s morning.”
“It really IS morning. I waited until it was actually morning before I waked up!” he announced, happily surprised. Seems like he thinks he’s been getting away with something during all those earlier wake-ups.
Though Hallie was clearly recovered from her stomach bug last night, it would have been 1 pm today before 24 hours had passed since she last threw up. That’s the guideline for sending kids to school, so she “stayed home.” Though we actually didn’t spend too much time at home. We took Travis to school, ran some errands, and spent quite a while at A.C. Moore. She loves that store, though she wants everything she sees and tends to get whiny over it all. But we made it out without incident. Read the rest of this entry »
Mark had thought he might be able to head home this afternoon from Charlotte, but he’ll have to be there at least through tomorrow midday. Since I hadn’t planned anything for dinner, I suggested to Hallie, “Would it be fun to go out to dinner?” Or course she said yes, so I asked where she’d like to go. I was prepared for choices as diverse as McDonald’s vs. Moe’s. And I thought I might be able to talk her into Cafe Capistrano. But without missing a beat, she piped up “Royal India!” Read the rest of this entry »
For several weeks now Travis has been fascinated with all things “five.” He wants five of whatever snack he’s eating, five songs, five hugs, five more minutes of play, you name it. I’m a little surprised he hasn’t started telling people he’s five years old yet! Tonight he asked me how to count to five in Spanish, and he’s already got it down.
Hallie didn’t manage to skip the stomach bug as we’d hope she would. But boy does that girl seem to have a tough constitution. I’ve lost track of how many times she’s gotten the same thing as T but bounced back in record time. She woke up chipper and playful this morning but got really draggy after breakfast. She complained that she was tired and her head hurt, and she kept dozing off on the couch. I had a feeling I knew what was coming, even though she said her stomach felt fine. Travis and I are home again after a very long night. Mark got most of the details in his posts. The main thing is that Travis is feeling much better and we’re home. I’m not entirely convinced the trip to Big Wake was necessary. Travis’s ER nurse made it pretty clear she thought it wasn’t. (She also made it clear she didn’t like the ER doctor, though he seemed fine to me.) But wasn’t worth taking any chances. Travis was still throwing up shortly before the ambulance came, and they did get extra fluids in him at Big Wake. I’ll talk myself into thinking it was a critical visit to prepare for the $1500+ it’s likely to cost us between the hospital, the ER, and yet another ambulance ride! Read the rest of this entry »
I heard from Kelly about a half-hour ago that Travis’s hospital visit is nearly over: he’s being released. There’s paperwork to be filled out, of course, but they should be home from the hospital soon. Hooray!
I forgot to mention that our poor, sick birthday boy spent most of the day sprawled on the floor, surrounded by balloons and unable to play. It was heartbreaking to see our guy not only miss his birthday party but to miss it in such a miserable state!
If he bounces back today maybe we can make it up to him by doing something fun.
Travis never turned a corner with yesterday’s stomach bug. He couldn’t keep down even small sips of water. After he threw up 5-6 times just after being put to bed, Kelly noticed he was throwing up bile and immediately called the advice nurse.
