The last week or two have been such a whirlwind I haven’t even posted about our upcoming move. This time last week we were still waiting to hear back on our offer to buy a 1905 triplex in a great old Raleigh neighborhood. The seller was balking at the level of inspections we wanted, and we ended up withdrawing our offer. Thanks goodness! Two days later we toured a total dump in another wonderful neighborhood. And then, almost as an afterthought, we went to our new house. (Ironically the seller of the 1905 house came back to us today after his other offer fell through, and we were overjoyed to say we were no longer in the market.) Read the rest of this entry »
It’s definitely time to start having more playdates for Travis. I’m hoping there will be some friends in our new neighborhood that will make that easy. Lately he has become extremely bossy in his play with me. He’s not ugly about things but he’s got definite ideas of how things are supposed to go. I’m hoping he doesn’t act this way with his school friends, but I’d still rather not let this become entrenched. Read the rest of this entry »
Travis is regressing. More and more often lately, he enjoys pretending he’s a baby. He even said to me out of the blue the other day, “I miss being a baby!” When I pressed him on what it was he missed, I didn’t get much clarification. I was holding him at the time, so maybe that was it. Read the rest of this entry »
Hallie’s been taking her antibiotics, albeit with quite a bit of resistance over the taste, and I haven’t heard another complaint about her ears since last Wednesday. I thought at that point that both kids were on the mend. Apparently Travis picked up something else, though. His nose started streaming again last weekend and by Monday he had a fever and an ugly cough. He was droopy yesterday morning but after some ibuprofen he perked right up. A couple of weeks ago I got myself in quite a snit about Hallie’s school experience. We’d been cruising along smoothly, with Hallie happy at school and me happy with what was going on there. But then several things happened at once that got me worked into a state of wondering whether she was in the right place, getting what she needs there, etc. Read the rest of this entry »
It doesn’t seem like we can ever have just a plain cold in this family. Both Hallie and Travis were dripping like crazy over the weekend. Fortunately, we had four days off school and things were under control enough for them both to go on Tuesday. They were still sniffly but not streaming anymore and acting fine. Then out of the blue last night, after a fun if rambunctious dinner with Aunt Suzie and Hadley and Davis, Hallie started complaining about her ears. First she said she’d gotten a bunch of wax out of them with her fingers. Then she said they were hurting. By about 9:30 she was pretty hysterical, wailing and moaning about how much they hurt. We got a way-too-short but very fun visit from Gum last Sunday-Monday. She’d been wanting to see Hallie’s school, so she snuck in a 24-hour visit to spend the morning with Hallie at Conn and some time with all the rest of us, too. Hallie was pleased as punch to have her Gum at school and it sounds like they both really enjoyed the visit. Read the rest of this entry »
Hallie finally got her wish and rode the bus home from Conn on Friday. She’s been asking to do that since school started, but it took me a while to give it a try. On Thursday afternoon we drove from Conn over to the school near our neighborhood where the express bus drops kids off. We met a mom there who had 4th and 1st graders who ride in the afternoons and spoke highly of the arrangement. Hallie got to meet the kids when they got off and I got to meet the driver. Hallie was busting with excitement, and I felt good about the arrangement, so we gave it a try. Read the rest of this entry »
I got a reprieve, but it didn’t last as long as I hoped it would. Last fall Travis went through phase of fighting his naps. But when we went back to a slightly later bedtime after Hallie got used to kindergarten, T went back to napping. Now, it seems, that 90 minutes of afternoon peace for me is over. As we’ve frequently posted, Travis wakes up with his mouth running full speed. Often he’ll comment on whatever he sees first thing or he’ll tell us crazy stories and then say he dreamt them. But this morning cracked me up more than any recent comments. As Travis stood in front of the toilet for his morning pee, he declared matter-of-factly, “Sometimes when you hold onto your penis it feels like it’s got bones inside it.” I don’t imagine I really have to spell out the context . . .
