Travis never turned a corner with yesterday’s stomach bug. He couldn’t keep down even small sips of water. After he threw up 5-6 times just after being put to bed, Kelly noticed he was throwing up bile and immediately called the advice nurse.
I was visiting at the neighbor’s Halloween party across the street and assuming T had settled down when Kelly rushed over to fetch me: she was taking T to the emergency room as he was in danger of dehydrating himself. I spent the next four hours at home in the chair beside the phone, waiting for updates.
Its wonderful to have a hospital just two miles down the road. Kelly called less than an hour later with the first update. Travis’s glucose levels were way down so North Wakemed gave him two IVs. That was just to tide him over until they could find a spot for him at the main Wakemed hospital because he couldn’t keep down the anti-nausea medicine and apple juice they had given him.
At two AM, Kelly let me know they were on their way to the main hospital (apparently this is when T got his latest ambulance ride). I spent a fitful night until the phone rang again at 7:30 with another update.
Right now Kelly doesn’t know how long they’ll be there today. T has cheered up a bit and even corrected Kelly when she told me “apple sauce” instead of “apple juice.” It was good to hear his cheery voice in the background. I got the impression they wouldn’t be there long but it does take a little time for new fluids to do their replenishing.
The doctor said that with Travis’s glucose levels as low as they were (44 when they should be 80-100) and his incessant vomiting there was nothing we could’ve done to bring him back to normal on our own. The advice nurse had told us when Kelly first called that as long as Travis was peeing that meant he was still hydrated. His last bathroom visit before his 8 PM bedtime was at 6, and it wasn’t too unusual for him not to have to go right before bed.
Looks like we’re on the mend now. I’ll update you when I hear from Kelly again.
