Hallie and Travis

The Story of Two Great Kids

It was a busy spring, leaving me with lots of posts to catch up on. Two of the biggies for Travis were his kindergarten orientation and his graduation from preschool. Both were very nice–and both felt rather anticlimactic.

I’m sure a lot of my reaction comes from having done all of this before with Hallie. But it’s also because all that he’s transitioning to is already familiar to Travis. He’s spent so much time at Conn, knows lots of his new classmates and many of the teachers, and is more than ready for the work he’ll be doing there. So while he really enjoyed his orientation and came out excited about kindergarten, it wasn’t the thrilling, novel experience it was for Hallie (and thus for the rest of us).

For his preschool graduation each of the classes did a performance (another boomwhacker piece for T’s class), got a certificate, and enjoyed a nice luncheon. But the celebration was a full week before the last day of school. And the week after school let out, Travis went right back for camp with his old teacher and on his old school schedule. This actually made for a nice transition, but there wasn’t really a concrete end to his school year. Also, having only been at HBBP for the one year it didn’t feel like we were leaving as much behind.

I’ve thought about Travis as a kindergartener (or older) for a long time. I’m very eager to see how the fall turns out for him. He’s so mature in so many ways but still fragile and needy enough at times that I think kindergarten may be an OK place for him. I think he’ll find a place and friends no matter where he ends up. We’ll just all have to work together to keep him busy!
